Blood Pressure What is It?

Blood pressure is the pressure of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. It is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). A normal blood pressure reading is less than 120/80 mmHg. High blood pressure is a condition in which the blood pressure in your arteries is too high. It is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke.

There are several things you can do to lower your blood pressure:

  • Eat a healthy diet. This means eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. It also means limiting your intake of salt, processed foods, and unhealthy fats.

  • Exercise regularly. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week.

  • Manage stress. Stress can raise your blood pressure. Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as exercise, relaxation techniques, or spending time with loved ones.

  • Get regular medical checkups. Your doctor can monitor your blood pressure and help you manage it if it is high.

If you have high blood pressure, it is important to take steps to lower it. High blood pressure can lead to serious health problems, but it can be controlled with lifestyle changes and medication.
