Why is insulin resistance, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes associated with obesity?

Insulin is a hormone that helps the body use glucose for energy. When you eat, your blood sugar levels rise. Insulin signals the cells in your body to take in glucose and use it for energy. In people with insulin resistance, the cells in their body do not respond normally to insulin. This means that glucose builds up in the blood instead of being used for energy. Prediabetes is a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. People with prediabetes are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition where the body does not produce enough insulin or does not use insulin effectively. This causes blood sugar levels to rise. Obesity is a major risk factor for insulin resistance, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes. The more excess weight you have, the more likely you are to develop these conditions. There are several reasons why obesity is associated with insulin resistance. One reason is that excess fat tissue produces hormones and other substances that can interfere with the way insulin works. Another reason is that excess fat tissue can make the cells in the body less sensitive to insulin. Insulin resistance is a progressive condition. Over time, it can lead to prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. If you are overweight or obese, it is important to take steps to lose weight. Losing even a small amount of weight can help improve insulin sensitivity and reduce your risk of developing these conditions. Other things you can do to reduce your risk of insulin resistance, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes include:

  • Eating a healthy diet

  • Exercising regularly

  • Managing stress

  • Quitting smoking

  • Getting regular checkups

If you have any concerns about your weight or your risk of developing insulin resistance, prediabetes, or type 2 diabetes, talk to your doctor. Sources info
